Classroom Tools for Teachers

A practical guide to running these in a classroom: the timer and the stopwatch on a projector and from the keyboard, and two astronomy simulators with the lesson written beside them. All free, no sign-up, nothing installed.

Timers for classrooms

Timers and classrooms go together because a visible countdown does the managing for you: it makes the length of a task explicit, it ends an activity without anyone being told off, and it turns "two more minutes" from a negotiation into a fact on the wall. On the projector

Both tools have a full-screen mode, which is the point at which a timer becomes readable from the back of a room: the digits fill the display and everything else gets out of the way. The countdown also appears in the browser tab title, so a teacher watching a laptop can see the time left without switching tabs.

The alarm clock is the one to use for a fixed moment rather than a duration — the end of a test, the start of an assembly — and its full-screen bedside mode doubles as a classroom wall clock.

The multi-timer board on the main timer page is click-only — the shortcuts are on the single-duration pages, which is where you want them mid-lesson anyway.

Transitions, rotations and routines

The timer runs up to three countdowns at once, each with its own label and its own alarm sound. That is enough for a three-station rotation where every group is on a different clock, and the different sounds mean a group knows their time is up without looking.

Common uses that map straight onto the presets above: a two-minute tidy-up, a five-minute warm-up, a ten-minute station, fifteen minutes of silent reading. There is also a study timer for longer focus blocks.

Reading fluency, repeated timings and experiments

This is what the stopwatch's lap button is for. Tap Lap at the end of each reader, each attempt or each trial, and you get a numbered list where every row shows two things: the lap time (how long that one took) and the total (elapsed time since you started). The fastest lap is highlighted green, the slowest red, and the fastest, slowest and average are shown above the list.

For repeated-trial work — a pendulum, a reaction test, a timed run — that means one session gives you every trial and the spread, without stopping and restarting between them.

Sharing what you measured

A measurement nobody can keep isn't much use in a classroom, so the stopwatch lets a session leave the page two ways:

The CSV is the one for records: a row per stopwatch — its name, a column for each lap, then the total — so three groups are three rows you can read down, and a term's sessions stack in one sheet instead of fighting over the lap numbering. A timing with no laps is simply the name and the time. The image is the one for people, and it is what you want to hand a student, drop into a report, or send to a colleague or a parent.

Both files are named for the date and time you saved them, followed by the names of any stopwatches you renamed — 2026-08-08-1615-group-a-group-b.csv. A folder of them sorts itself into the order the lessons happened, and no two ever overwrite each other.

Nothing is uploaded. The session — including a stopwatch still running — is stored on that computer, so it survives a refresh, and the CSV and the image are made in the browser.

Science: the sun, the moon and the solar system

Two simulators, both free, both running entirely in the browser, and both built so the picture never claims more than it can show. Each carries its own lesson plan and a scale card that says exactly how wrong the drawing is — which is usually the most useful twenty minutes in the room.

Sun, Earth & Moon movement simulator

The Earth seen from above its orbit, with your own town marked on it, the half of the planet in daylight, and the moon at its true angle from the sun. Drag through a day, a week or a month, or press Play.

There is a page for every city with a sunrise page, so you can start from wherever the class actually is. Location, date, time and span are all in the link, so one URL puts thirty screens on the same sky.

Solar system simulator

The planets on their real orbits, with a slider over a month, a year, a decade or a century, and a zoom that climbs from the Earth and Moon out to Neptune.

Off-screen follow-up, and the one students remember: shrink the Earth to a 16 mm marble and walk the class down the corridor. The moon is a 4.4 mm bead — a peppercorn — 48 cm back; the sun is a 1.7 metre ball, taller than you, 188 metres away.

What a browser timer can't do

Worth knowing before a lesson depends on it:

Running stations? Six stopwatches on one screen lets each group have its own — named, and coloured so a group can find its card from across the room — and exports them side by side.

Ask us to build something for your class

Ask us for a simulator, not a countdown. Something scientific — a tool that shows how a thing actually works, of the kind the rest of this site is made of. What would make a concept land for your class if they could see it move? Tell us, and we will take it as a challenge and build it in the shortest time we can, so your class finds out that a well-made ask can turn into a real thing.

What we can build

Everything here comes out of orbits, formulas and real measurements, so anything of that kind is within reach: an alignment, a cycle, a comparison, a scale you can walk out on a field, a body we have not drawn, a figure worked out a different way. If it can be computed, it can probably be shown. Purely creative asks — a story, a game, artwork — we probably cannot do, and we would rather say so now than leave you waiting. Ask anyway if you are unsure; the worst answer is no.

The best asks help more than one class

If it would work for your students it will very likely work for a class three states away, and that is what turns one request into a page other teachers use. So aim at the idea rather than the worksheet — and if your class can say what they wish they could watch, they have already done the hard part.

Please ask as a class, not as thirty students

Make the ask part of the lesson — let them argue about what would actually help — then send one email from the class rather than one each. Something like “Request from Ms Thomas's 3rd grade class — Chico, CA”. We will do our best to reply to every one.

If we build your idea, your class gets the credit

It goes on the page it inspired: “Ms Thomas's 3rd grade class, 2026–2027 school year — Chico, CA.” That is what the fields below are for, and nothing else. Leave any of them blank and we will simply leave that part out.

It is worth telling your class what that means before they write the ask. It is a public page, on the open internet, that exists because they asked for it — something to show a parent or a head teacher, and something they can come back to in five years and point at the part that is theirs. Very few school tasks end with evidence that the work changed something outside the room. This one can.

Required — a request nobody can reply to is a request we cannot ask a question about. Used only to answer you, never shared and never added to a list.

Classroom timer FAQ

Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs? It keeps counting, but it can only ring while the page is still open — the tab can be in the background, the window can be behind another, but the page has to be there. If the laptop sleeps or the tab is closed, the alarm won't sound. On a classroom machine, leave the timer tab open on the projector output.

Can I run more than one timer at once? Yes — up to three at the same time on the timer page, each with its own length, its own label and its own alarm sound. That covers a rotation where three groups are on different clocks.

What are the keyboard shortcuts? On a timer's own page: Space starts and pauses, R resets. On the stopwatch: Space starts and stops, L records a lap, R resets. The multi-timer board on the main timer page is click-only — the shortcuts live on the single-duration pages.

How do I get the lap times out of the stopwatch? Two ways: CSV saves a spreadsheet that opens in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers — one row per stopwatch, a column for each lap, then the total — and Share builds a single image of the session to send or save. Both files are named for the date and time you took them, so a term's worth of them sorts itself. Nothing is uploaded; the session lives on that device.

Is it accurate enough for a science experiment? For classroom work, yes — it times to a hundredth of a second. It is not calibrated equipment: the precision your device actually shows varies by browser and machine, and a background tab may update less often. It is not suitable for official sports timing, scientific measurement or anything medical.

Can I use the astronomy simulators on a projector? Yes — both are full-width and run in the browser with nothing installed. The Sun, Earth & Moon simulator has a page for every city, so you can open the one for your own town, and the location, date, time and span are all in the URL, which means one link puts every screen in the room on the same sky. Both carry a scale card explaining exactly what the drawing gets wrong, which is worth reading out loud.

Do I need an account? No. There's no sign-up and nothing to install — it runs in the browser, and anything you save (a running stopwatch, its laps) stays on that computer.
