World Cup Champions, Last 15 Editions
Six countries, three continents
The centenary edition is split like no World Cup before it. Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay each stage one opening-round match on June 8 and 9, honouring the tournament's South American birthplace. The rest of the competition is played in Morocco, Portugal and Spain, starting June 13 and 14, and runs through July 21.
How the 2026 World Cup finished
Spain arrive at 2030 as holders. They beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time at MetLife Stadium on July 19, 2026, Ferran Torres scoring in the 106th minute for Spain's second world title after 2010. The other two semi-finalists produced a ten-goal bronze final in Miami: England beat France 6-4, with a Bukayo Saka hat-trick. The 2026 edition was the first with 48 teams and 104 matches, played across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
One hundred years of the World Cup
The first World Cup kicked off in Uruguay in July 1930, with thirteen teams and a purpose-built stadium — the Estadio Centenario — finished only days before the opening matches. Uruguay beat Argentina 4-2 in the final in front of a reported 68,000 people. The 2030 tournament returns to that stadium exactly a century later.
The dog who saved the World Cup
Four months before England hosted the 1966 tournament, the Jules Rimet trophy was stolen from a London exhibition. A week later a mongrel named Pickles, out for a walk, sniffed it out of a hedge wrapped in newspaper. Pickles became a national hero and got a year's supply of dog food; the thief got two years. Brazil, for the record, remains the only nation to have played in every World Cup.
